SOIL AND CLIMATE
Soil
- It can grow on various soil types from sandy loam to clay soils. It gives best results when grown under well drained soil with pH range of 6 to 7.5. Crop cannot withstand in water logging conditions.
Climate
- Sowing Temperature: 25-30°C;
- Harvesting Temperature: 15-20°C;
- Rainfall: 400-500 mm
LAND PREPARATION
One deep ploughing followed by 2-3 harrowing to make to fine soil particles. Level the field by planking after ploughing.
TIME OF SOWING
October – November
SEED RATE (per acre)
35 – 40 kg/acre
SPACING
Early varieties: 30 cm (Row to Row) X 5 cm (Plant to Plant)
Late varieties: 45 cm (Row to Row) X 10 cm (Plant to Plant)
Sowing Depth: 2-3 cm
SEED TREATMENT
Treat the seed with Captan or Thiram @ 3 g/ kg of seed OR
Carbendazim @ 2.5 g/ kg of seed to protect from the seed & soil born diseases
IRRIGATION
Pre sowing irrigation should be given for good germination. After sowing it requires 1-2 irrigation. Apply first irrigation during pre-flowering and second at pod formation stage. Heavy irrigation leads to the yellowing of plants and thus reducing the yield.
